History of the departmentThe Department of Theory and History of State and Law of the Faculty of Law was established in accordance to the decision of the Academic Council of the NAU on September 19th, 2001, to ensure providing teaching of fundamental legal disciplines and the formation of students with sound knowledge in the field of law, as well as for developing the necessary general theoretical and historical and legal base of teaching fundamental and professionally-oriented legal disciplines. Since September 2001, the Department was headed by Miroshnichenko Vasyl Ivanovych, candidate of historical sciences (PhD of Historical Science), Associate Professor. From September 2003 to February 2010, the head of the department was a candidate of legal sciences (PhD of Law Sciences), Professor Vitaliy Petrovich Marchuk. Since 2010 to January 2022, the department was headed by Borodin Ivan Lukyanovich, Doctor of Law (DSc of Law Science), Professor. From February 2022 to June 2022, the department was headed by Golovko Svitlana Hryhorivna, candidate of historical sciences (PhD of Historical Science), Associate Professor, veteran of NAU. Since September 2022 the Department of Theory and History of the State and Law is headed by Makeieva Olena Mykolaivna, candidate of law (PhD of Law Sciences), Associate Professor. The main tasks of the Department are: ensuring the acquisition by students of a legal conceptual apparatus necessary for knowledge and mastery of legal disciplines; realization of legal education of students through subjects taught at the department; formation legal culture in students, skills and abilities of research work; organization and conducting of professional peer review practice. The Department of Theory and History of State and Law provides the teaching of 31 disciplines and conducting a professional acquaintance practice. Since October 2017, the scientific and pedagogical staff of the department provides teaching of subjects in English for students of the 1st year of the Law Faculty within the framework of the English-language project. The main areas of the department's scientific-methodical and research work are problems of the theory and history of the state and law, and current problems of modern state-building and legal understanding. Lecturers of the Department of Theory and History of the State and Law of the Faculty of Law take an active part in scientific and theoretical, domestic, international conferences, maintaining close ties with the Institute of State and Law of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine named after V.M. Koretskyi, the Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights, the Educational and Scientific Institute of Law of Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University and other institutions of higher education in Kyiv, state authorities, organizations and legal institutions. The department conducts round tables and scientific and practical seminars on issues of protection of human and citizen rights and freedoms, current problems of state and law-making in Ukraine. It is important that starting from the first year, students have the opportunity to participate in all-Ukrainian and international scientific conferences and publish these scientific research reports under the guidance of experienced teachers. Teachers and employees of the department constantly carry out organizational work among the student youth of the department and are mentors of student academic groups: associate professor of the department I.P. Varava, associate professor of the department S. G. Holovko, senior lecturer of the department V.Yu. Oleshchenko. The teachers of the department organize educational excursions for students to historical reserves and museums of Kyiv, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, the Constitutional Court of Ukraine and other educational activities. Professional orientation work at the department is aimed at active involvement of entrants in training at the Law Department of the NAU. Different forms of it, in particular, personal talks of faculty teachers with future entrants, interesting performances by students of the Faculty of Law about the advantages of studying at NAU help to increase the rating and competitiveness of a higher educational institution.

Priority directions of scientific work:
One of the priority areas of scientific research of the Department of Theory and History of the State and Law is working on the state budget topic "Theory and practice of ensuring human rights in the conditions of modern challenges and threats" No. 36-2022/13/01/01 (01.10.2022 - 30.06.2025), the scientific adviser of which is the head of the department, PhD of Law, Associate Professor Makeieva O.M. Priority Directions of Scientific Work of the Department of Theory and History of State and Law 1. Human rights as a fundamental value of a democratic society (executor is Candidate of Juridical Science, Associate Professor Makeieva Olena Mykolaivna).
