The Department of Civil Law and Trial was established on January 18th, 2001 to ensure the teaching of basic civil legal educational subjects, creating the necessary educational and methodical basis, making scientific researches on the problems of civil law and trial, family and labour legal relations, international private law and legal ensuring of professional activity and to ensure the ability to acquire practical skills of students in practical training.
From August 2002 till 2005 the Department was headed by L. S. Netska, PhD (Law), associate professor. During this period the teaching of educational subjects at the Department was made by: R. A. Kalyuzhnyi, DSc (Law), professor; V. V. Luts, DSc (Law), professor, Academician of the Academy of Legal Sciences of Ukraine. From 2005 till 2014 the Department was headed by N. V. Filyk, PhD (Law), associate professor, who made considerable efforts to involve the leading specialists in the sphere of civil law and trial and labour law to the Department's activity, as well as ensure the effective work of the Department's teaching and subsidiary staff. From 2014 till July 2015 the Department was headed by R. O. Mashukov, PhD (Law).
Since July 1st, 2015 the Department is headed by S. V. Vyshnovetska, DSc (Law), professor.
In 2010 the Department's specialization was expanded and at present it has civil and labour law specialization. The perspective Department's activity directions are selection and training of young professionals by postgraduate study, creation of scientific and methodical basis, development of software to be used in the latest information technology, scientific research and deepen study of civil law cycle.

Ya. Vavzhenchuk presented candidate thesis on the theme "Constitutional Bases of the Executive Authority Development in Ukraine"; In 2009 N. V. Daraganova presented candidate thesis on the theme "The Administrative and Legal Status of the Aircraft Crew in Ukraine". In 2010 Kh. V. Kmetyk presented candidate thesis on the theme "International and Legal Problems of Functioning of Transnational Corporations"; In 2010 T. V. Rudnyk presented candidate thesis on the theme "Realization of the Principle of Humanism during Execution and Serving of Punishment as a Kind of Imprisonment"; In 2010 E. S. Gusaryeva presented candidate thesis on the theme "Justice as a Constituent Part of Legal Systems of the Contemporary Countries of the World and Ukraine"; In 2014 O. O. Starytska's presented candidate thesis on the theme "Institute of Protection of Consumers' Rights in the Independent Ukraine (Theoretical and Legal Research)"; In 2016 N. V. Trotsyuk presented candidate thesis on the theme "Administrative and Legal Defence of Copyright";
Also in June 2014 S. V. Vyshnovetska presented doctor thesis on the theme "Methodology of the Labour Law Science". In 2015 T. M. Yamnenko presented doctor thesis on the theme "Realization of Rights in Financial Legal Relations: Problems of Abuse and Proving Unlawful Conduct".
At present the teaching and professorial staff of the Department of Civil Law and Trial consists of 13 persons, namely: the Head of the Department – S. V. Vyshnovetska, DSc (Law), professor; 3 professors – Kozhevnikova V.O. DSc (Law), Diduk A.G. PhD (Law), T. M. Yamnenko DSc (Law); 7 associate professor's – G. M. Grabovska PhD (Law), M. P. Dyban, PhD (Law), R. V. Padun, PhD (Law), V. V. Filinovych, PhD (Law), B. S. Shcherbyna, PhD (Law), Sukhodolska A.A.PhD (Law), V. V. Nikitin PhD (Law); 2 senior lecturers – N. F. Hotsyanovska, I. A. Slobodska.
The Department of Civil Law and Trial provides teaching of 24 educational subjects, the learning of which ensures forming the future specialists in the sphere of civil, civil and trial, family, international private and labour law.
At present the main directions of the Department's methodical and research activity are study of problems of civil law, in particular, legal regulation of civil legal relations during formation and development of air transport industry, questions on legal description of civil law subjects, problems of legal regulation of delictual liability, questions on protection of rights to the intellectual property objects, questions on legal regulation of family and hereditary legal relations, methodological problems of labour law general theory.
The educational and methodical complexes were developed and a number of educational accessories and textbooks on the basic courses were published by the efforts of the Department's professorial and teaching staff, namely: "Civil Law", "Family Law", "Civil Trial Law", "Intellectual Property Right", "Comparative Private Law", "Labour Law", "International Private Law", "Corporative Law", "Social Safety Law", "Housing Law", "Civil Contracts in Bank Activity", "Civil and Legal regulation of Medical Services", "Problems of Labour Law".
Under the supervision of the Department's teaching staff students are actively engaged in scientific work, the results of which are annually presented by them on the "Days of Science" of the Law Faculty and on the conferences.
Upbringing of students' legal culture, respect to the human rights and freedoms are the fundamental component of activity of every member of the Department during the lectures or in extracurricular time, i.e. in the University and hostels, during excursions and meetings with interesting people who works in legal institutions, human rights organizations, law unions. The Department's teaching staff regularly meets with students to discuss all necessary questions and it is actively engaged in agitationtional activity in schools in Kyiv and regions.
