On April 15, 2024, at the invitation of the Directorate of Human Rights and Rule of Law of the Council of Europe, Iryna Sopilko, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Law, and Olena Makeieva, Head of the Department of Theory and History of State and Law, participated in the presentation of the International HELP Course "International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights."
The event was organized by the Council of Europe Project "HELP (Human Rights Education for Legal Professionals) for Ukraine, including during the war" in cooperation with the Supreme Court.
The participation of the faculty leadership in this presentation meeting took place within the framework of the signed Memorandum of Cooperation between the Council of Europe Office in Ukraine and the National Aviation University.
The participants were welcomed by Stanislav Kravchenko, President of the Supreme Court; Christos Giakoumopoulos, Director General of the Directorate of Human Rights and Rule of Law of the Council of Europe; Maciej Janczak, Head of the Council of Europe Office in Ukraine; and Ana-Maria Telbis, Head of the Training Unit on Justice and Human Rights of the Department for the Implementation of Human Rights, Justice and Legal Cooperation Standards of the Directorate General of Human Rights and Rule of Law of the Council of Europe.
The gathering was moderated by Olga Kostenko, the international manager of the Council of Europe Project "HELP (Human Rights Education for Legal Professionals) for Ukraine, including during the war." A brief overview of the course was presented by the course authors, Council of Europe experts Patrycja Grzebyk, Nobuo Hayashi, and Natalia Hendel.
This course presents the legal framework that allows for a deeper understanding of international human rights standards in combination with the principles of international humanitarian law in the context of armed conflict. It is developed in English and available on the HELP platform. The organizers noted that it will be translated into Ukrainian in the near future.
During the presentation, Judge of the European Court of Human Rights Mykola Hnatovsky, Head of Operations of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Ukraine Gillan Defurne, Judge of the Criminal Cassation Court within the Supreme Court Halyna Kret, Head of the Department for Combating Crimes Committed in the Context of Armed Conflict of the Office of the Prosecutor General Yurii Bielousov, Chairperson of the Board of the Center for Civil Liberties Oleksandra Matviichuk, and others also spoke.
Studying the HELP course "International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights" will help 4th-year students of the specialty 081 "Law" better prepare for the Unified Professional Entrance Examination for admission to the Master's program, enhance their level of competence, and shape them into highly qualified legal professionals in the future.
