On January 25, 2024, Judge of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Halyna Yurovska, together with a judge of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine, a representative of Ukraine in the of the Consultative Council of European Judges (CCJE), Viktor Horodovenko, held the first lecture of this year on "Judge and Artificial Intelligence: Benefits, Challenges and Threats" (Part I).
The online event was attended by academic staff, applicants for higher students majoring in 081 "Law" and 262 "Law Enforcement" and postgraduate students of the Law Faculty.
The judges spoke about the use of information technology and the possibility of using artificial intelligence in the administration of justice, the key principles of the European Ethical Charter of the European Commission for the Efficiency of Justice (CEPEJ) of the Council of Europe on the use of artificial intelligence in judicial systems and their environment (2018), their content and implementation. It is noted that such principles are respect for fundamental rights, transparency, impartiality, fairness, and control by the user.
In addition, the lecturers drew attention to the peculiarities of the use of artificial intelligence by judges, emphasizing the main role of the judge and his/her personal responsibility in case of using artificial intelligence in their research or work. "Artificial intelligence is a rapidly developing family of technologies that can bring a wide range of economic and social benefits across the entire spectrum of industry and social activities. By improving forecasting, optimizing operations and resource allocation, and personalizing service delivery, the use of artificial intelligence can contribute to socially and environmentally beneficial outcomes and provide key competitive advantages to companies and the European economy," said Ms. Yurovska.
