On December 13, 2023, oral hearings on the admissibility and merits of the interstate case "Ukraine v. Russia" under Nos. 20958/14 and 38334/18 took place at the premises of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in Strasbourg. Participating in these hearings was Yuliia Riabokon, a student of the Legal Faculty, PR-405 group.
The Ukrainian delegation, led by Deputy Minister of Justice Iryna Mudra and Margaryta Sokorenko, Commissioner for the European Court of Human Rights, together with Ben Emerson KC, presented the position of the Ukrainian Government in the case and provided comprehensive information in response to questions from the judges of the ECHR.
It is worth noting that the other party did not appear for the court session. "Russia is accountable to this Court for human rights violations committed by its own forces, as well as for violations committed by its local subordinates since the day of the state coup," stated Iryna Mudra, Deputy Minister of Justice of Ukraine, during the session. The speaker emphasized that widespread and systematic human rights violations committed by Russia and its proxies in Crimea were directed against ethnic and religious minorities, pro-Ukrainian activists, journalists, Ukrainian Armed Forces servicemen, and all individuals, groups, and organizations opposing Russian occupation or perceived as such.
The ECHR is expected to render a decision on the substance of the filed complaints regarding Crimea, as well as a decision on the admissibility and merits of the case concerning political prisoners.
"This was an incredible day in my life, and the case considered at the ECHR underscores the need for effective protection of human rights in the face of Russia's unjustified crimes," noted Yuliia Riabokon on social media.
