On December 8, 2023, as part of career guidance, Viktoriya Cherevatyuk, associate professor of the Department of Theory and History of the State and Law of the Faculty of Law, visited the Ternopil Secondary School of Grades I-III No. 14 named after Bohdana Lepkoy in Ternopil, where she met with eleventh-grade students and gave a lecture on "Children's rights. What do schoolchildren need to know about them?", dedicated to Human Rights Day.
At the beginning of the meeting, the lecturer emphasized the importance for every person to know their rights and be able to protect them, because only then will it be possible to restore justice and prevent further violations of them. Understanding that high school students are already aware of their basic rights and understand which of them can be limited under martial law and which are inviolable, the speaker discussed with the students specific situations when their rights were violated and what types of human rights protection they used. This aroused the interest of teenagers, as they understand that this knowledge is aimed at protecting their rights and personal development. The participants of the meeting did not ignore the issue of the importance of human rights education, which includes our civic competences, in particular, responsibility, respect, the ability to work in a team, resolve conflicts, etc. Victoria Cherevatyuk emphasized that increasing the culture of respect for human rights will help to form an effective human rights protection system in our country.
The speaker also discussed with the high school students the main international documents that set out the rights of the child, in particular the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, the Ukrainian legislation that regulates the issue of children's rights, noting that in the conditions of war it is necessary to think about new guarantees for the protection of children's rights, new approaches to understanding and implementation of children's rights. The state and public institutions should pay special attention of the international community to the problems of protecting the rights of children in the conditions of the Russian Federation's war against Ukraine. The goal is to improve students' skills in protecting their rights.
During the meeting, prospective applicants were also informed about the admission conditions and benefits of studying at the Faculty of Law of NAU.
