On December 07, 2022, a meeting with a practicing lawyer Kateryna Voitenko was held at the Faculty of Law for 1st year students.
The topic of the lesson "Free legal aid in Ukraine: modern approaches" was chosen by the guest not by chance, because she directly has a contract on a permanent basis with a state institution to provide free secondary legal aid to the population.
"The state must provide free and qualified assistance to low-income persons when they are accused of committing criminal offenses. Such person can defend himself/herself personally or use a legal entity of a defender chosen at his/her own discretion, or in the absence of sufficient funds - to receive such assistance free of charge, when the interests of justice require it", - said Ms. Kateryna.
During the speech, the lecturer revealed the essence of primary legal aid to the population: providing consultations, explanations, drafting procedural documents, analyzed the interaction of law enforcement agencies and lawyers, highlighted the problematic issues of their interaction and ways to solve these issues. The speaker separately focused on the concept of "acquittals", which are of great importance and value for a practicing lawyer in providing secondary legal aid.
The result of this meeting is an agreement with Kateryna Voitenko on mutual cooperation and internship of students in public authorities, namely directly in the provision of free secondary legal aid.
