On April 29, 2022, the Information and Educational Center for Human Rights of the Faculty of Law, together with the Department of Civil Law and Procedure, held a workshop “Peculiarities of placing children in orphanages and foster families in a state of war” via videoconference for pupils of the Secondary School No. 205 in Kyiv.
The event was attended by Dean of the Faculty of Law Iryna Sopilko, Director of the Information and Educational Center for Human Rights Olena Makeeva, Head of the Civil Law and Trial Department Svetlana Vyshnovetska, scientific and pedagogical workers, 1st-year students and schoolchildren.
“The topic of the workshop was not chosen by chance, because there are no other people's children - they are all ours! This expression is very important today. Today we have a sad outcome of the war: thousands of children became orphans, lost their guardians, faced the horrors of war, got lost during the bombing, evacuation from war zones, went missing, and were forcibly taken to the territory of the aggressor country and do not know anything about their parents. In recent weeks, photos of Ukrainian children - victims of the war - are on the first columns of the world media. Tens of thousands of crippled lives of minors need special protection, care, and concern,” said the dean.
During the event, the attention of schoolchildren was focused on the rights of the child during the war period, and the issues of the functioning of family-type orphanages and foster families as important forms of placement for orphans and children deprived of parental care were disclosed. Particularly informative and useful for those present were the norms of Ukrainian legislation on the social protection of orphans, children deprived of parental care, and the specifics of admission of this category of persons to family-type orphanages and foster families during the military events in Ukraine.
At the end of the event, Yana Temchenko, a student of the PR-102B group, shared her own experience of choosing a higher educational institution with schoolchildren who had the opportunity to watch videos about the Faculty of Law of NAU and get comprehensive answers about the features of the 2022 entry campaign.
Legal education activities help to improve the legal culture of young people, help determine their future profession, and form a sense of patriotism and national identity.
“Our victory is close thanks to the courage and heroism of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the unity and self-sacrifice of the Ukrainian people! Ukraine cannot be defeated! After the victory, we must give every child who has lost his parents as a result of hostilities a family. It’s easy to say, but difficult to do, but it’s worth striving for,” Associate Professor Ganna Grabovska said at the end of the meeting.
