On September 24, 2019, in the framework of the Memorandum of Cooperation between the NAU and the Levitt Institute for International Development (USA), which launched the English course “Critical Thinking and the Bar as the Foundation of a Free Society”, the first lesson was held for the Law Faculty students by an American lawyer, expert of Levitt Institute for International Development (USA) – Jim Moss.
During the lesson, students discussed with the speaker various approaches to understanding law and the specifics of legal practice in the field of US labor law. The lecturer noted that in the US government, which is based on the separation of powers and the rule of law, the judiciary acts as independent carrier of broad authority.
The subject of discussion during the meeting was the problems associated with finding answers to the question: is the judge a referee or an active participant in the trial? Which lawyer may be called good? What is justice? Which judicial system is the best? The joint reasoning of the American lawyer and students of the Faculty of Law brought ease of communication and aroused keen interest among all those present. The main message of the meeting is cooperation and the need to establish an effective dialogue on the development of the rule of law.
For students of the faculty, participation in this project is not only an English-speaking practice, but also a unique opportunity to learn professional skills from experienced American lawmakers. In addition, the Levitt Institute for International Development will ensure the participation of our students in international litigation and the training of the best students in the United States, which will allow students to study the US experience in improving the effectiveness of justice.
